Sacred Heart Catholic Church

It was a cold Christmas day in 1911 when a small wooden church was dedicated. It was the beginning of the Sacred Heart parish. It was started by Father Harrington, pastor of Ascension Church in Minneapolis. Father Blum was appointed their priest in 1912 serving until 1931. It stood on West Broadway and Avenue, cost $6, 900. It had 38 families in 1921, by 1938 there were 500. Joseph Boise and John Reimer were the trustees.

The 38 families made 175 persons. A rectory was built in 1914 at a cost of $5,700. Prior to 1911 the closest Catholic Church was Ascension or St. Mary’s on the Rockford Road. In 1912 pews rented for $8.00 per year, per person. Sunday collection was expected to be not less than 10 cents for each wage earner. A school was built in 1926. The church burned in 1973. A new building was dedicated in 1974.

his material was gathered from the North Hennepin Post and the diaries of Ellen M. Bisbee, (sister of J. P. Shumway and Nathan F. Russ J. P. Shumway). It was compiled and edited by Evelyn and Esther Shumway for a Robbinsdale Historiocal Society slide show in 1980.
