A Typical Home?

“Typical home-owning is Robbinsdale’s major ‘industry.’ Many beautiful homes such as this one, owned by Reuben Katz, adorn residential avenues.”

-Minneapolis Tribune, Sunday Magazine, 1943

Reuben O. Katz built his unique family home on Shoreline Drive, overlooking Crystal Lake. Passersby would be duly impressed, but the home was anything but “typical.” It included tiled roofs, arched windows, beamed ceilings, and a clever u-shaped design.

A path from the street led to an elaborate rock garden behind the house, with a bridge curving over running water pumped from a well, stone outcroppings, and colorful foliage.
