The Robbinsdale Recruits

On July 29, 1915, the Robbinsdale Civic Club Band, W. F. Grenell, director, held the first of many Open Air Concerts in the new bandstand. It had been erected with the help of many public spirited citizens at the corner of West Broadway and 42nd Avenue. The stand was later moved to a site near the present water tower on Hubbard Avenue and still later to 40th Avenue and West Broadway. It was demolished in the late 1940’s and in the 1960’s a portable bandstand was purchased.

Robbinsdale’s World War I recruits in a truck bearing a huge banner “Robbinsdale to Berlin” consisted of Eddie Lacomb, William Schlundt, Julius Sessing, Dave Parkhill, John Nasett, and Nick Clasen.

This is the ninth in a series of posts featuring Dorthy Hartig’s History of Robbinsdale. This informal account was written for the Robbinsdale Library Club in 1948. A copy was placed Lee’s School’s cornerstone time capsule the following year. The image at the top of the posts features a pinhole photograph of Robbinsdale’s World War I contingent.
