In the middle of the 1920’s the names of Robbinsdale’s streets were changed to eliminate duplication and create a unified alphabetical system between the villages of Crystal, Golden Valley, and Robbinsdale. Villas Avenue (below) became Noble Avenue. College Avenue, named for the Lutheran Seminary that burned down in the 1890s, was renamed Regent.
Marston Avenue, (pictured in the postcard below) became Perry. The alphabetical streets move west through Robbinsdale with Xerxes, York, Zenith, Abbott, Beard, Chowen, Drew, Ewing, France, Grimes, Halifax, Indiana, Kyle, Lee, Major, Noble, Orchard, Perry, Quail, Regent, Scott, Toledo, Unity, Vera Cruz, Welcome, Xenia, Yates, and Zane.
Alphabetical streets, starting at Aldrich Avenue in Minneapolis, stretch through at least seven sequences all the way out to Lake Minnetonka.
The College Avenue Postcard and the Villas Avenue Postcard pictured here are from Jeff Vick’s postcard collection.
