To Build a Town

 To build a town, building material, lumber, plaster, etc., are needed. The first to be established, and a concern which has played an important part in the growth of Robbinsdale and vicinity, is the John F. McDonald Lumber Corporation, formerly the Thompson-McDonald Lumber Co.

JOHN F. McDONALD LUMBER CORPORATION PROVES GREAT FACTOR IN UPBUILDING OF ROBBINSDALE

The slogan, “One Piece or a Carload,” which was originated by the John F. McDonald Lumber Co., and used in an extensive advertising campaign, has made the firm known from coast to coast. Mr. John F. McDonald, treasurer of the John F. McDonald Lumber Corporation, established in the lumber business in 1900. The business grew with rapid strides and now embraces six yards and a sash and door warehouse, which is located at 112 Sixth Street NE. The yards are located most centrally in each locality. Yard No. 1 at 114 Seventh Street NE; Yard No. 2, 2837 Third Avenue S; Yard No. 4, 599 North Snelling Avenue, St. Paul; Yard No. 5 at Robbinsdale; Yard No. 6, 412 Kittson Street, St. Paul; Yard No. 7, 511 South Third Street.

Looking west on 42nd toward the railroad tracks in 1914. Tom Howard later purchased the Thompson McDonald Lumber Yard across the street. Howard and later his wife Alma owned and operated the yard in the same location for over seventy years.

The John F. McDonald Lumber Corporation has gained a high reputation as dealers in good lumber.

The yards at Robbinsdale carry a complete assortment of lumber, lath, shingles, millwork, lime, plaster, brick, cement, and roofing in large quantities, assuring immediate delivery.

The yard is in charge of F. P. White, a veteran lumberman, whose large acquaintance has wrought a very extensive patronage. The general offices of the John F. McDonald Lumber Corporation are located at 511 S. Third Street, Minneapolis.
