Rediscover Historic Graeser Park

“Save the Beehive” has become a rallying cry in Robbinsdale lately. Our town’s Graeser Park (originally called “Robbinsdale Rock Garden Roadside Parking Area”) is home to the only beehive fireplace still standing in its original location in the entire US!

Stone masons who worked on building the Lilac Way parks in the 1930s. It was a big job: they cut and placed stones for tables, benches, paths, steps, walls, and fireplaces in seven roadside parks.

If you travel on Highway 100, you may have noticed the restored beehive that stands on the east side in Lilac Park (formerly “St. Louis Park Roadside Parking Area”) near the Nordicware tower. That fireplace (originally located in the Minnetonka Boulevard Roadside Parking Area) was saved from destruction during the widening of Highway 100, moved to the new location, and rebuilt by modern-day workers using the same skills employed by the stone masons who originally built the fireplaces in the 1930s.

Haven’t been to Graeser Park lately? Stop by and check it out!
