Cheer as they come!

Here’s a few scenes from a 1956 parade down 42nd Avenue North. The big news in Robbinsdale that year was the opening of Robin Center on old Highway 52 between 40th and 42nd. The grand opening ceremony was held in the parking lot. Radio and television newscaster, Bill Ingram was the master of ceremonies. Builder, Douglas Rees was on hand with Mayor Robert Merwin, members of the city council and Les Larson, president of the Robbinsdale Businessmen’s association. Miss Robbinsdale, Virginia Wheeler was on hand for the ribbon cutting along with the famous Robbinsdale City Band directed by Bob Mendenhall. In other news Police Chief Matt Spurzum announced that there would be rigid enforcement of the city’s curfew ordinance. Youths under the age of 16 had to be off the streets by 9:30. Children between the ages of 16 and 18 had to be in by 11:00. Several midnight raids at Twin Lake resulted in the apprehension of dozens of boys and girls. Most of them said they were 15. Parents were told they must pick up children at the police station following a first curfew violation. A second violation would result in parents being charged for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Those were the good old days.
